Dallas StarsNovember 7, 2009
Alex Auld was great, the PK was great, the PP again fell short. Were the Stars too emotional, and did it cost them at times?
But I can't really blame them. Brenden Morrow was just called for diving, and it could be the worst call I have ever seen in my life. Brent Burns was battling with Morrow, he had his thigh behind Morrow's thigh and he pulled his stick under Morrow's chin. He literally picked him up and threw him down, and they called Morrow for diving. If you see it in slow motion, it is laughable. Morrow, of course, got up, picked up the puck and shot it into the Wild's empty net. That is a real no-no in hockey, and Morrow was clearly showing up the ref, so he got an additional unsportmanlike conduct penalty. Then, Marc Crawford decided that wasn't enough, so he kept barking at the refs and he drew a bench minor. So, we have 42 seconds of 5-on-3 power play against to start the third period (when the Stars should probably be on a power play). I think this is a key point in the Stars' season The team either comes back and rallies from the dispute against the refs, or it goes down 4-2 and falls apart, Either way, I'm glad to see the emotion. This might be the first time we have really seen a mad Marc Crawford. The entry "Stars coming a little unraveled" has no entry tags.
Brent Burns with another penalty (interference) and the Stars score their second power play goal against the No. 1-ranked penalty kill in the league. Brad Richards with a big shot-pass from the point, and Eriksson on the doorstep with a perfect redirect. It is 2-2 and shots are a more reasonable 24-13 in favor of the Wild.
Stars get a power play and Loui Eriksson tries to center a pass to Steve Ott. Minnesota defenseman Nick Schultz blocks the pass, but knocks it right into the net for Eriksson's seventh goal of the season. 2-1 Minnesota. Mike Modano then got hit by Cal Clutterbuck and left the game. He looks hurt, and it looks like it could be his rib again. (No wait, he's back on the bench again). We'll monitor.
Mikko Koivu had just a great individual effort in front of the net. He had a great shot that Auld stopped, but then Koivu beat Loui Eriksson for possession of a loose puck,p and trevor Daley was slow to get over to help, and Koivu squeezed one between Auld's pads with 2:02 left in the first period. We are at the intermission and the Wild is out-shooting the Stars 17-4.
Loui Eriksson drew a four-minute penalty from Brent Burns for a high stick, but not only did the Stars not score, they gave up a short-handed goal. Trevor Daley leaped to try to glove a puck and keep it in at the blueline, but it went over his head and Cal Clutterbuck raced around him and then whipped in a shot from the right wing over Alex Auld. Dallas is down 1-0 13 minutes in and has been out-shot 11-1 so far. The Stars PK has been very good and Auld is looking good, too.
Do you ever feel like your biorhythms are just off? I am not reading coach Marc Crawford very well at all right now. Alex Auld will be your goalie tonight. Marty Turco had maybe his best game of the year Friday, but Auld will get the go tonight against Minnesota. Turco worked with Mike Valley this morning. Crawford said that Auld has had a great week of practice, and this is what the plan was so they needed to stick to the plan. He had definitely talked to Valley and Andy Moog about it, and everyone seems on board that Auld should be in net tonight. Anyway, several of you had some great moments in the picks, but two stood out. Loui XXI had a 3-0 Stars win (2-1) with Richards and Turco among the three stars and the Stars 1-for-4 on the power play (1-for-3) and Vancouver going 0-for-2 (0-for-2). Not bad, eh Until you look at the work of Jeff J., who may had the most accurate pick of the entire year. He had the Stars winning 2-0 (2-1), he had Brad Richards with the first goal at 0:57 of the second period (Richards at 8:05 of second), he had the Stars at 1-for-3 on the power play (1-for-3) and Vancouver at 0-for-2 (0-for-2), and he had Marty Turco and Brad Richards among the three Stars. That was incredible. Anyway, on to Minnesota. I fear the Stars will have to adjust too much to Alex Auld's game and will have a slow start, so we'll go with: Minnesota 3, Stars 2 First goal: Andrew Brunette, 4:51 in first period. Alex Auld saves: 29 Niklas Backstrom saves: 31 Stars power play: 1-for-4 Minnesota power play: 2-for-3 Three Stars 1. Niklas Backstrom What say you? The first ever home game for the Allen Americans will take place tonight at 7:30 p.m. at the Allen Events Center. Olympic gold medalist Carly Patterson will sing the National Anthem, and there will be much promotion as the expansion team tries to draw new fans. They're off to a 5-1-1 start after playing their first seven games on the road, so it should be fiun to see them at home. The Texas Brahmas are also at home tonight with a game in North Richland Hills at 7:05 p.m. The defending CHL champs are off to a 3-3-2 start.

The Wild is a lot like the Stars in that management and fans tired of an approach that appeared too conservative. So Minnesota got a new GM in Chuck Fletcher, a new coach in Todd Richards, and is trying to open things up a bit. But there are a few key differences. Richards does not have Marc Crawford's experience behind the bench, and Minnesota does not have the Stars' young players. Hockey's Future ranks the Wild prospects as 30th in the NHL. and the Wild has struggled to put together consistent runs of up-tempo hockey. Here, Michael Russo gives you updates from Friday's practice. The Stars are either walking into a hornet's nest or into a team in disarray. We'll see. I'll keep it short, as I have to get on an early flight to Minnesota. This is exactly the lesson the Stars needed. They had another 1-0 lead, and they dug in and pushed it to 2-0 _ just as they were unable to do the other night. They capitalized on the power play, they dominated against a tired anjd injured team, and they gave themselves a 2-0 lead. That should have been it, right? Lesson learned. But, nope, Vancouver scored with 11 minutes left to make it a one-goal game, and then drew almost four minutes in consecutive power play time down the stretch. The Stars dug in, killed the power play, and Marty Turco hung on against 17 third-period shots. It was a really nice victory _ a victory this team ``earned.''
