Brendan Haywood plays like a semi truck, at least compared to the Mavericks, who were averaging more than 118 points in games without him. So does Erick Dampier, for that matter.

Mack and Peterbilt, you might say.

"That's 14 feet in the middle," as Caron Butler said. "That's a lot of size, so it's great to have those guys back."

The Mavericks looked a lot different with their beef back. And that's the way it's going to be. They survived a lousy start Wednesday night and turned things around behind Haywood, Butler and former Net Jason Kidd, and escaped with a 96-87 victory at American Airlines Center.

That's 13 in a row, if you're counting, tying for the third-longest winning streak in franchise history.

"Our style is different depending on who's in the game," said Haywood, who returned from lower-back tightness. "When I'm in there, we're more of a traditional offensive team. But when we go small, we can really spread you out and give you that up-and-down fast pace.

"It's like two different gears. We can go the speed limit. Or we can gun that thing and go 95 down the highway."

On Wednesday, the Mavericks drove 55. Except for the beginning, when they were stuck in a school zone for 12 minutes.

After scoring the first point of the game, they gave up the next 11 and were down by 18 in the second quarter.

It was Haywood who bolstered the defense in the third quarter, when the Mavericks turned things around. He, Kidd and Shawn Marion applied the defense, and the Nets started the third quarter 3-for-21 from the field, finished at 5-for-26 and were outscored 31-15 by the Mavericks.

It wasn't until Kidd hit the last of his five 3-pointers with 2:43 left that the Mavericks went up, 90-85. Butler and Haywood combined for the last six points to fend off the Nets, who fell to 7-57 and still need three more wins to avoid finishing with the worst record in NBA history.

Kidd put a hurting on his former team with 20 points, nine assists, four steals and a block of Brook Lopez in the final seconds to seal it.

Shomari Staten is a used auto dealer who lives in Carrollton but wants to move.

A year ago, the 32-year-old businessman was roughed up by police as he waited to deliver a car to a client in Carrollton.

The incident was captured on police video. Staten struggled to get that video, filing an open records request and then a legal action in Dallas County court. The city didn't want to give over the video, citing pending prosecution of Staten for failure to show his concealed weapons license and for resisting arrest. Staten was never prosecuted. And the state lege changed the state law in September 2009 on procedures for concealed handgun licenses, which eliminated prosecutions for failure to show the hangun license.
