Rice just put together a scoring drive that makes this thing a little too dramatic for SMU tastes with 1:47 to play. The Owls converted on two fourth downs on the drive, including the four-yard scoring pass on fourth and 1. Rice's two-point conversion pass was good, meaning SMU leads just 31-28. Rice tried an on-sides kick but Bradley Haynes wrapped it up tightly. It looks like SMU will hold on for its fifth victory of the season. The entry "Rice pulls to 31-28 with 1:46 to play, but SMU should hold on for fifth victory" has no entry tags.
SMU boosted its lead to 31-20 with 10:12 to play after turning a turnover into points. Youri Yenga forced a fumble, which Chase Kennemer recovered for SMU at Rice's 24. After a nifty move in which quarterback Kyle Padron headed one way, appeared stuck, spun the other direction and then plowed forward for a gain, he let Shawnbrey McNeal do the rest. The running back rushed nine yards for his second touchdown of the day. McNeal has 18 carries for 81 yards. Rice also aided SMU with a facemask penalty on third down. The entry "SMU up 31-20 with 10 to play" has no entry tags.
Matt Szymanski kicked a 23-yard field goal to increase SMU's lead to 24-20 late in the third quarter. SMU put together a nice drive, using Shawnbrey McNeal and a 30-yard connection between Kyle Padron and Emmanuel Sanders. Sanders has 136 yards receiving and a touchdown. Padron is 15 of 19 for 219 yards, a touchdown and an interception. McNeal has 123 carries for 68 yards and a touchdown. The entry "SMU's lead increases to 24-20 late in third quarter" has no entry tags.
Margus Hunt, the 6-8 Estonian world-class shot putter, just blocked his sixth kick of the season, this one on a 34-yard field goal attempt by Rice. It was his second block of the game - including a blocked extra point in the first half - and SMU's third. Hunt also had two blocks in a single game in the East Carolina win last month. The NCAA record for blocked kicks in a season is eight. The "Wolf," as his name means when translated in Estonian, is well on his way. The entry "This Estonian is a kick-blocking machine" has no entry tags.
SMU The worst SMU stat of the day: seven penalties for 77 yards. And there's more coming. Bryan McCann was flagged for excessive celebration for taking his helmet off at the end of his touchdown return. The officials said it would be enforced in the second half. Shawnbrey McNeal has seven rushes for 41 yards and a touchdown. Rice
SMU cornerback Bryan McCann just returned a blocked field goal attempt 74 yards for a touchdown with the clock at 00:00 at the end of the second quarter. The extra point gave the Mustangs a 21-20 lead after SMU had trailed 20-7 at one point. Cornerback Sterling Moore was credited for the block. Rice was lining up for a 37-yard field goal with two seconds left before halftime. McCann returned a blocked field goal 63 yards for a touchdown in the East Carolina win on Oct. 10, just before half - also a huge momentum swing for SMU. SMU defensive end Margus Hunt had blocked Rice's extra point attempt earlier in the half, the difference in the score now. The entry "Special teams come up huge for SMU again" has no entry tags.
SMU really needed that. Kyle Padron led a 78-yard scoring drive, finding Emmanuel Sanders for a 23-yard touchdown pass and a 37-yard completion to Sanders earlier in the drive. Shawnbrey McNeal converted a big third down on 3-and-3 to keep the drive alive. The touchdown catch was Sanders first since the TCU game on Oct. 3. It was Sanders' 30th career TD catch. He's the NCAA career leader for active players. Rice 20, SMU 14 with 1:29 to play in the first half. Padron doesn't appear at all rattled after his earlier interception and lost fumble. He's still showing his ability to stay on his feet and look downfield, buying time to make plays. The entry "SMU gets big score before half" has no entry tags.
SMU fans must have feared this. The Mustangs coaches certainly did. SMU felt good about itself this week after its win at Tulsa. Now it's trailing winless Rice, 20-7, with 5:23 to play in the second quarter. Rice entered the game averaging 14.88 points a game. The Owls moved 80 yards again, finishing the drive off with a 1-yard touchdown run by Charles Ross. The play was reviewed to see if he broke the plane before losing control of the ball, and the touchdown call was upheld. SMU has hurt itself with six penalties for 66 yards already. Rice QB Nick Fanuzzi is 8-of-12 for 103 yards and two touchdowns. Ross has eight rushes for 37 yards. The entry "Rice takes a 20-7 lead at SMU" has no entry tags.
You had to figure things wouldn't always go so nicely for freshman quarterback Kyle Padron. He's struggled a little bit here today, throwing an interception and now losing a fumble. He also fumbled earlier in the quarter but SMU recovered. Rice quickly turned it into a 33-yard touchdown pass to a wide-open Patrick Randolph, who had his second touchdown grab of the day. The good news for SMU: Margus Hunt blocked the extra point. It's getting to be a pretty standard happening. It was Hunt's fifth blocked kick of the season, which sets an SMU record. It's winless Rice up 13-7 with under a minute left in the first quarter. The entry "Rice takes lead; Hunt blocks another kick" has no entry tags.
The Owls responded to SMU's opening drive with an 80-yard scoring drive of their own, finished off with an 11-yard pass from QB Nick Fanuzzi to Patrick Randolph in the back of the end zone over corner back Bryan McCann. Fanuzzi was 6-of-9 on the drive and SMU had trouble defending 6-6 tight end |
