We spent a lot of time with the video camera yesterday, sitting down for a one-on-one conversation with SMU coach June Jones about this season and the team's possible bowl date. Later, I sat down with Tim Cowlishaw and Kevin Sherrington for the first episode of the very creatively-named "Dallas Morning News Sportswriters Roundtable" to talk about Texas vs. Texas A&M and whether Mike Sherman should be under any fire this season. Also, we discuss the Cowboys' (Dallas, not Oklahoma State) recent offensive woes and finish off with a little gabbing about the Rangers (Texas, not Kilgore College) and their ownership issue. Brittney Griner, Baylor's 6-8 freshman star-in-the-making, became the seventh woman in NCAA history to dunk Tuesday night. Expect more where this came from. Griner had 52 dunks as a high school senior at Aldine Nimitz. Baylor went on to beat Jacksonville State, 104-45. Griner recorded 20 points, six rebounds and eight blocks in 21 minutes. Here's the video footage of the historic dunk, which happens about 24 seconds into the clip: The entry "Baylor's Griner gets first college dunk" is tagged: Brittney Griner
If you're interested in my thoughts on Vince Young's future after watching him play in Houston last night, go here. The entry "JJT: Vince Young is a changed man and a better QB" is tagged: Mack Brown , Texas , Vince Young
David A.K. Matlin, the executive director of the Sheraton Hawaii Bowl, confirmed that he will be in attendance for Saturday's SMU game against Tulane. I think "Mele Kalikimaka" is what they say instead of "Merry Christmas" on the islands... The entry "Hawaii Bowl getting closer to being official?" has no entry tags.
After being named a finalist for just about every award short of the Nobel Prize for economics on Monday, Colt McCoy has made a bit of a move in the HeismanPundit.com poll. The good news: he's a clear second in the poll, ahead of players like Toby Gerhart and Tim Tebow. The bad news: there is still a big gap between McCoy and front-runner Mark Ingram of Alabama. McCoy needs big closing games against Texas A&M and Nebraska in the Big 12 title game and has to hope Ingram stumbles against Auburn and or against Florida in the SEC title game. This from Chuck Carlton: Southlake Carroll product Tre Newton, coming off a career-high in all-purpose yards against Kansas, has again been elevated to the top of the tailback depth chart at Texas. Newton is expected to start Thursday when the Longhorns close the regular season at Texas A&M. He ran for 66 yards against Kansas and caught three passes for 36 yards. Newton had moved into the starting tailback spot earlier in the season before suffering a concussion against Colorado. He's looked more like himself lately, with 80 yards rushing on seven carries against Baylor on Dec. 14. Cody Johnson drops down to second on the depth chart, with Fozzy Whittaker and Vondrell McGee sharing the third spot. The entry "Tre Newton up to first in the Texas backfield depth chart" has no entry tags.
Texas QB Colt McCoy is about to hit the awards circuit again - along with some of his teammates. The finalists for The Home Depot ESPNU College Football Awards - live on Thursday, Dec. 10, at 6 p.m. on ESPN - have been announced. The Heisman Trophy award ceremony is the following Saturday, Dec. 12. Here are the finalists: Doak Walker Award (best running back) Chuck Bednarik Award (best defensive player) Biletnikoff Award (best receiver)< The entry "Finalists announced for college football awards" has no entry tags.
Wyoming's Dave Christensen, formerly Chase Daniels' offensive coordinator at Missouri, is the only coach to square off against Texas and TCU this season. You can read his thoughts on who might win a matchup between the two. And later in the story, comes this comment from Cowboys' quarterback Austyn Carta-Samuels: "My childish opinion is just that [TCU's] defense is a lot stronger than Texas. "They're the fastest team we've played all season." The entry "One coach's take on Texas-TCU" has no entry tags.
First, I suspect that both Notre Dame and Kansas will be changing football coaches when the season is out and there will be two themes central to the ousters of Charlie Weis and Mark Mangino: Mediocre play and boorish behavior. The charges of verbal abuse that border on downright uncaring are pouring in concerning Mangino. Weis has long been considered arrogant, vulgar and obnoxious, which are fine characteristics for a late-night comedian, but not so much for a builder of men. If both guys lose their jobs, hopefully the moral will be that before you start treating subordinates, players, media and opponents like they are inferior, maybe it would be a good idea to actually win something. Even with a 12-1 season in 2007 (which wasn't good enough to make the Big 12 Championship game), Mangino is just 50-47 at Kansas. On the field, he needs to beat Missouri this week to end a six-game losing streak and make Kansas bowl eligible. After going 19-6 in his first two years at Notre Dame, mostly with Ty Willingham's players, Weis is 16-20 the last three years now that the program is truly in his hands. And if he loses his job, his lone bowl win will be last year's Hawaii Bowl.On Sunday, Weis said he won't resign, but won't be surprised if he's fired. The real question, which can't be answered anytime soon, is if he's done irreparable damage to Notre Dame's program. 1. Coming off that big Hawaii Bowl win last year, Notre Dame was ranked 23rd in the preseason AP poll. I'm still not sure the Irish's 6-5 record gets them into the top five most disappointing teams in the country this year. I'd have to go with this list:
Nope, Notre Dame didn't make the list. Guess that's another thing brought down during the Weis Era: Expectations. The entry "1st and 10: A spin around college football" has no entry tags. November 22, 2009
Turns out, SMU's regular-season finale Saturday afternoon against Tulane won't hold much pressure at all. The way the ACC standings have played out, Conference USA will definitely have a spot in the EagleBank Bowl - giving C-USA six bowl berths. The ACC has only seven bowl eligible teams and can't get any more. The EagleBank is the ACC's eighth selection. C-USA ends up with the spot, according to a league official. With how C-USA has played out, that means SMU (6-5) is essentially locked-in for a berth even if it finishes 6-6. Hawaii would clearly take SMU over a 6-6 UAB or Marshall team. Houston, East Carolina, Southern Miss and Central Florida all have seven wins or more. Marshall and SMU have six and UAB has five with one week left to play. It's highly unlikely SMU would be the team left out of the six spots. The fourth-longest bowl drought nationally appears to be over - no matter last night's loss to Marshall. Originally, it appeared C-USA would be waiting on whether or not Army would be bowl eligible for its spot in the EagleBank Bowl. But that's no longer the question. |
